Royals consider Washington Square Park as possible site for new stadium

The Royals suffered a setback in their bid to build a new downtown baseball stadium after losing a referendum in April, but efforts to find a new site are ongoing. According to Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star, talks between the city and the Royals are ongoing. One possible new site could be Washington Square Park.

The proposed baseball stadium would be located between Main Street and Grand Boulevard, just north of Pershing Road. Washington Square Park, located at the intersection of 5th Street and Broadway Boulevard, is a historic 25-acre green space created in the early 19th century. Named after Washington Square in New York City, the park is known for its beautifully landscaped gardens, expansive lawns, and mature trees. It also features several monuments and memorials, including a statue dedicated to Civil War soldiers.

A new stadium in this central location could significantly improve accessibility for fans from across the city and surrounding areas, potentially increasing attendance. Improved public transportation and infrastructure would make getting to games more convenient. In addition, a modern stadium with state-of-the-art amenities, improved seating and improved food and beverage options would likely enhance the fan experience. Creating a vibrant entertainment district around the stadium could also provide additional dining, shopping and entertainment options, enriching the game experience. From an economic perspective, the move could spur revitalization of the area and spur growth and investment in local businesses and infrastructure in this dynamic part of the city.

However, there are also potential downsides to consider. The cost of building a new stadium could be significant, potentially requiring significant public funding or putting a strain on the team’s finances. The central location could bring challenges such as limited parking, which could lead to congestion and accessibility issues on game days. In addition, the development could disrupt existing community spaces and impact current fans who are accustomed to the existing stadium’s location. Weighing these factors will be critical in deciding whether the benefits outweigh the potential downsides.

Earlier this year, Kansas lawmakers passed a measure offering the Royals and Chiefs lucrative incentives in the form of STAR bonds to move across state lines. The Chiefs are aiming to have a final stadium proposal by year’s end.

The royals are still actively considering their options.
