LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) – Chad Fischer, owner of Chadderbox Hobby Shop in the Lufkin Mall, has been interested in all things card games, Pokémon and comic book culture since he was a child.
What started as a YouTube channel about opening Pokémon card booster packs with Fischer’s children has developed into a full-fledged shop for comics, games and fantasy.
The same things Fischer is looking forward to at Piney Woods Comic Con.
“Large events of this kind are too rare in relation to the number of customers who are looking for something like this,” says Fischer.
Fischer says he has been at the mall for over a year now, offering fans of Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering and other card games a place to meet and play.
When he heard there was going to be a Comic Con in Lufkin, he was there.
“It’s an escape from reality through the comic universes, through the anime worlds,” said Fischer.
One of the largest Comic Con in the world takes place in San Diego. Day tickets cost over $100. Weekend tickets for Piney Woods Comic Con cost $25.
By doing so, Fischer hopes to make the event more accessible to fans and give them the same joy that he believes they feel in his store.
“It has happened so many times that people have come into this store and are just thrilled. That’s the greatest thing for me,” said Fischer.
Piney Woods Comic Con kicks off Saturday and Sunday with cosplay, vendors and more from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center.
