Officers shot and killed a man as he stabbed his mother outside their Irvine home.

Irvine police cordoned off a residential neighborhood following the shooting, which occurred around 2:50 p.m. near Green Tree Lane and Coral Tree Lane near UC Irvine.

“When officers arrived, they saw the man actively attacking the woman and they believe the suspect stabbed her,” said Irvine Police spokesman Kyle Oldoerp. “Very tragic for our community. We are committed to finding out why this happened.”

Neighbor David King said the victim’s son had had problems in the past.

“As far as I know, the son is mentally ill,” he said. “He has been in prison several times and has just returned home. Apparently there was an argument between the two and he chased her with a knife.”

Investigators could not confirm the events leading up to the fatal stabbing. They searched the neighborhood for surveillance videos that documented the incident.

“I can’t get it out of my head and every time I speak I shake,” said neighbor Marco Rodriguez.

Police identified the suspect as 37-year-old Paul Parvea Montazer of Las Vegas. The mother was identified as 72-year-old Parvin Montazer of Irvine.

Although unrelated, this is the second stabbing that resulted in a police shooting in Irvine this week.
