A Honolulu police officer shot and killed an armed 60-year-old man Wednesday night who reportedly fired into a neighbor’s home in Waianae after a heated argument with his girlfriend, who had fled to live with relatives there, HPD Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said today during a news conference.

The suspect, 60-year-old Alston “Kaipo” Awong, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Awong has 11 previous convictions for serious crimes, including drug and firearms offenses and terrorist threats.

The Eighth Precinct patrol officer who shot and killed Awong has been with HPD for four years.

Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, officers were dispatched to a home on Puhinalo Place in Waianae. A 911 caller reported a dispute in the street, followed by reports of an “armed male shooting at a home and attempting to enter,” Logan said today during a news conference at HPD headquarters on Alapai Street.

When officers arrived, they heard “screams coming from the house.”

“They ran to the back of the house and found a man armed with a handgun. The man was standing behind a broken glass door. The next officer repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon,” Logan said.

“But instead of putting the gun down, the man chambered a bullet, pulled the bolt back and let it slide forward. At that moment, the officer fired two shots at the suspect. The man fell to the ground and the officer administered first aid until paramedics arrived,” Logan said.

Two women, aged 32 and 34, and a 25-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds, but they were not life-threatening. Awong’s girlfriend, who is in her 70s, suffered “assault-like injuries” and two other adults and two teenagers were also in the house but were unharmed.

Awong lived across the street from the house he shot. He argued with his girlfriend before her relative, who lives across the street from Awong, took her into his home.

Awong entered his house and came out with an unlicensed homemade rifle.

“He pointed the rifle at a neighbor and the relative’s house and attempted to fire the rifle without success,” Logan said. “The suspect then went back into his own house and came out with a handgun. He then walked across the street and fired approximately four shots at his girlfriend’s relative’s house.”

The gun Awong used was stolen, Logan said.
