The median home price in South Bay exceeds million, making it the first in the U.S. metropolitan area.

According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the San Jose metropolitan area has the dubious honor of being the first market in the United States where the median home price exceeds the two million dollar mark.

In addition to San Jose, the metropolitan area also included the Sunnyvale-Santa Clara region. The median value here was $2,008,000.

“It is the first time since NAR began tracking single-family home prices in metropolitan areas in 1979 that the median price in a metropolitan area has exceeded $2 million,” the realtor group said.

The record was set when California metropolitan areas were listed in seven of the ten most expensive markets in the United States.

After the South Bay, the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward market had the next highest median price for existing single-family homes, with a median value of over $1.4 million.

“Conversely, some markets that experienced declines last year, such as San Francisco, have rebounded,” NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun said in a press release.

The market in Salinas was also one of the top metropolises. The median value there was just over $1 million.

Other California markets on the top 10 most expensive list were: Anaheim-Santa Ana-Irvine at $1.4 million, San Diego-Carlsbad at over $1 million, Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura at nearly $928,000, and San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles with a median of about $895,000.

“Record-high housing prices in most metropolitan areas bring good news and bad news,” Yun said. “It’s great news for homeowners who are just increasing their wealth. But it’s difficult for those who want to buy a home, as the income required to qualify has roughly doubled from a few years ago.”
