The Stack: OOH sector and BBC break records; AI usage increases sharply

This week on The Stack: OOH sector and BBC break records; AI usage soars; today’s episode of the MadTech Daily podcast

This week, records were broken in advertising technology, with the BBC leading the way with its new streaming record. Thanks to its coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the broadcaster recorded 218 million streams – more than double the number of viewers for the Tokyo Olympics. In addition, over 12 million viewers were logged into their iPlayer accounts while watching the content. A record was also set in Europe, with 215 million viewers tuning in to coverage of the Games broadcast by Warner Bros Discovery. Meanwhile, the out-of-home (OOH) advertising sector set its own record, recording its strongest growth yet in the first half of this year. Unsurprisingly, the increase was largely driven by digital OOH, which grew by 21%.

Perplexity AI has also had a promising year so far, with usage increasing sevenfold since the beginning of the year. The search engine answered around 250 million questions last month – a pretty impressive number when compared to the 500 million questions it answered in all of 2023.

The antitrust news was less positive. Spotify and Epic Games criticized Apple’s newly revised compliance plan for the EU’s Digital Markets Act, calling it intentionally confusing and unlawful. Apple’s plan calls for the introduction of two new fees: an Initial Acquisition Fee and a Store Services Fee.
