“A little background about me – I am 22 years old, Muslim, just graduated from a top NIT and moved to Bangalore to work as a software developer in a MAANG level company. My office is between Bellandur and Marathalli on the ring road. I am looking for a 1 bedroom apartment in a newer building in a good locality with good roads and public transport connectivity. It takes around an hour to commute. I am willing to pay around 25k for it,” he wrote.

In the following lines, he recounted situations in which landlords suddenly refused to rent him a house after learning about his religion. He added that the agents also showed him accommodation in “run-down places”.

What did Reddit users say about this post?

“There are many Muslim flat owners, most of them are mallus. Ask a mallu friend, they will be able to help you,” wrote one Reddit user. Another added, “Sorry to hear about your experience but the best way is to reach out to people your age directly through the ‘roommates’ groups on FB. Even nobroker has a ‘roommates/PG’ section. I only skimmed your post so excuse me if you were looking for emotional support and not solutions.”

A third commented: “Man, you can’t get an apartment like this in a prime location for $25,000 a month. I don’t think it has anything to do with your religion. Bangalore is insanely expensive now. In Indiranagar, you have to pay at least $30,000-35,000 for a decent one-bedroom apartment. I am a Hindu, but it took me 4 months to find my current place, a very old 2-bedroom apartment. I am not happy with it, but it is the best we could afford within our budget.”

A fourth added: “Brother, 25,000 for 1 BHK is ridiculous, don’t make Bengaluru like Mumbai.”
