CLEMSON – A longtime franchise chain has closed its doors on Tiger Boulevard in Clemson, but new restaurants are moving in to ensure there are plenty of dining options on the city’s main thoroughfare.

Meanwhile, Bricks and Minifigs has set the opening date for its new location in Central. The Lego thrift store will be located next to the Fiesta Grill on Eighteen Mile Road in the former Sally Beauty Supply shop.

A few buyback days have already been held to begin building inventory ahead of the official debut next month. The store is located at 1280 Eighteen Mile Road, Suite F, in the shopping center next to Walmart and will open to the public on September 21st.

Just down the street, on the corner of Main Street and Pepper Street, a new café and coffee bar is causing a stir.

Mugshot Coffee is hard to miss, as it has a mural of the criminal mascot Mugzy on the side of the black building. It serves hot and iced coffee from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Mug Shot is open again from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., also serving those attending training sessions on Bolick Field across the street.

Half of Pickens County is a child care desert. Officials hope $500,000 can change that.

Fast-casual food is never far away on Tiger Boulevard. While Pizza Hut has closed its branch, a new pizzeria – Stoner’s Pizza Joint, to be precise – began offering its menu of pies, salads and cinnamon rolls on August 2.

It took over the former Sweet Spot Bake Shop at 1607 Tiger Blvd., Suite 20, next to Zen Ramen and Jersey Mike’s. Stoner’s serves its calzones, strombolis — including cheesecake –, jumbo wings, and small and large pizzas daily starting at 11 a.m. It’s open until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and to accommodate night owls, keeps its doors open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Just down the street, a new restaurant is planned for 1112 Tiger Blvd., next to the city police station. Café Racer filed its initial paperwork with the city in May to begin construction. The property is currently wooded, but that could soon change, as the owners applied for their zoning permit in late July.

The Athens, Georgia-based coffee and doughnut shop offers smashburgers in the morning, chicken and fries on its afternoon menu. Although there will be a drive-thru, developers told the city the focus is on the on-site dining experience.

Closer to Lake Hartwell, the former Subway building next to Dockside is getting a small facelift – and some access improvements – on the way to HipBurger.

The South Carolina-based franchise currently has a location in Mauldin and serves a variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, nuggets and milkshakes.
