Base jumper dies in 150-meter fall in Grand Canyon National Park

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, Arizona. – A man who was illegally base jumping in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park died earlier this month after a 500-foot fall from the South Rim.

On August 1, dispatchers at the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report that a visitor had attempted to base jump from Yavapai Point. When park rangers arrived on the scene, they found the man’s body under the rim and a deployed parachute.

Rescue teams were able to reach the victim and his body was recovered from the ravine by helicopter and transported to the Coconino County Coroner’s Office.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident.

The victim’s name was not released.

Base jumping, a high-risk activity that involves parachuting from fixed objects, is prohibited in all areas of Grand Canyon National Park, rangers said.
