Chinese restaurant in Norwalk reopens more than a year after fire

NORWALK, CT — Chiu Fai Garden recently reopened at 48 Westport Avenue, more than a year after a fire broke out in the building.

On Thursday, signs outside the Chinese restaurant indicated that the business was reopened to customers, and customers could be seen entering the restaurant in the afternoon.

In February 2023, Deputy Fire Chief Adam Markowitz said a fire was reported in the two-story commercial building, with flames and thick smoke coming from the roof toward the center of the building.

According to Markowitz, the fire apparently started in the stove area of a restaurant and spread through the ventilation openings to the roof. Emergency crews extinguished the fire in about 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported, Markowitz said.

A request for comment from the Norwalk Fire Department was not immediately returned Friday.

Chiu Fai Garden offers Cantonese, Hunan and Sichuan cuisine and is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10:30pm and Sunday from 12pm to 10pm.

According to the website, the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays.

Chiu Fai Garden is located in a strip mall near Stew Leonard’s, Starbucks and the new Mediterranean and Caribbean restaurant Costa Vino. The mall also includes The Spot at Just Dance Studios and a United Veterinary Center animal clinic.
