The Travel with AUS The expansion program is underway – and new details on one of the projects at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport are lift up.
The West Gate expansion will create 84,500 square meters of new space on three levels on the west side of the Barbara Jordan Terminal. The project reached new heights in July 2024: The first steel beam was erected.
Meeting the needs
Since ABIA continues Breaking records for passenger numbers, the expansion is key to keeping up with the airport’s demand. Other planned innovations include the West Infill Project and the expansion of Hall B, a hall with 20 gates, which will be connected to the Barbara Jordan Terminal by a new tunnel.
The vision for Concourse B requires the removal of three gates. To compensate for this loss, the West Gate expansion will add three new gates.
What to expect
A standout feature of the West Gate expansion is a new mezzanine with an outdoor balcony and indoor viewing area where travelers can relax and enjoy views of downtown and the West Runway.
The following is also planned:
- Seating areas for five goals
- New restaurants
- A play area with art integration
- A meditation/relaxation room + family and breastfeeding rooms
- New toilets and a rest area for pets
The schedule
With the first steel beam installed, the Journey with AUS team is now looking forward to the next milestones: erecting the steel and attaching the building’s outer skin structures. They expect the project to be completed in spring 2026.
