Construction costs for planned fire station on the east side of Normal rise by almost 57%

NORMAL (25News Now) – Inflation pressures are being felt as the city of Normal builds its first fire station east of Veterans Parkway.

The Normal City Council will be asked to approve a budget amendment that increases the total cost by nearly $2.8 million, a nearly 57% increase from the original estimate of just over $4.9 million.

The staff report to the City Council states that the city has sufficient reserves in the fire station’s capital investment fund to cover the increase.

Staff note that the city also received a $1 million grant from the state government to help fund the now $7.7 million project.

The new Fire Station 2 is located at the northeast corner of Hershey and Shepard Roads in the Blackstone Trails neighborhood and replaces the current station at College Avenue and Blair Drive.

A fire station east of Veterans Parkway would improve response times in an area that includes residential neighborhoods, schools, a regional park, a nursing facility, businesses and major roads, the staff report said.

The council is expected to vote on the budget amendment on Monday evening, August 19. Construction is scheduled to begin in October, with completion planned for October of next year.
