Tobacco shop employee hit by ricochet; man shot in NYC: police

A tobacco shop employee was grazed by a ricochet bullet early Friday when a gunman gunned down a competitor in the Bronx, police and sources said.

The clerk, a 37-year-old woman, was closing the tobacco shop on West Fordham Road near University Avenue in University Heights around 1:20 a.m. when she suffered a graze wound to her right thigh, authorities and sources said.

The apparent intended target, a 43-year-old man, was arguing with the suspect outside a deli on the same block, near Devoe Park, when he took a bullet in the back, police and sources said.

A video obtained by The Post shows a man pulling another man to the ground in front of the deli while a large crowd of young-looking men and women surround them.

The clip then shows the moment the shooting took place – after which everyone scattered, except for the male victim, who can be seen writhing on the ground.

Then the crowd comes back and gathers around the injured man.

The tobacco shop employee cannot be seen in the video.

The man was taken by ambulance to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition, police said.

The woman traveled privately to Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where her condition was stable, police said.

Locals told The Post on Friday that the woman, who received 10 stitches, returned to the scene of the accident hours later with a stick.

A description of the suspected shooter was not provided later Friday; he was still at large.

In the 52nd Precinct, which includes the area of ​​the incident, the number of shootings has increased so far this year.

As of Sunday, according to the latest available statistics from the NYPD, 28 people had been shot in 15 incidents within the precinct.

During the same period in 2023, 13 people were shot in ten incidents, according to the data.
