Minneapolis entrepreneur found dead in Brazilian apartment building – authorities suspect third-party negligence

MINNEAPOLIS — Brazilian authorities are investigating after a Minneapolis businessman was found dead while on a business and vacation trip.

D’Wayne Morris, 43, was president and founder of Blue Waters Consulting and Soul Community Development Corporation. The Roosevelt High School graduate had strong ties to the community.

“He was a great partner,” said Tamatha Richman, Morris’ partner. She said he made everyone he met feel like they were their best friend.

“He has a way about him that makes everyone think he’s a very special person when he’s interacting with others. In the last week, so many people have told me they’re D’Wayne’s best friend or his brother and sister without them being blood related, and that’s really how he’s presented himself in his relationships,” Richman said.

Whether as a teacher, basketball coach, or working at a nonprofit organization in Minneapolis, Morris always gave his best to his work.

“While others may have perceived him as someone who was always busy, D’Wayne was actually more about sharing his gift, so it came easily to him. It energized him to be able to connect to help and give,” Richman said.

Morris graduated from Southwest Minnesota State University and managed a $14 million corporate portfolio and served as a financial advisor.

Morris was the sole breadwinner for his blended family, which included Richman’s three children and his only child.

Their home was a place where they mentored other young adults – another way to give back to the community.

“Being a partner with D’Wayne means sharing him with the world,” Richman said.

As a family they loved to travel.

“We have traveled to many different countries and were aware of the things that are necessary when traveling internationally,” Richman said.

That’s why she has so many questions about the events in Brazil.

“This doesn’t make sense. D’Wayne was in the country for less than 24 hours. D’Wayne hadn’t even spent the night in Brazil,” Richman said.

Morris was found dead in his rental home in Brazil.

His family and the authorities suspect a crime.

“This is definitely a situation where D’Wayne was the target,” Richman said.

His death does not overshadow how much he contributed to the lives of many. He leaves behind a legacy of love and encouraging others to be their best.

Richman is planning a celebration of life in Minnesota. Morris will be buried later in Jamaica.
