Improvements planned for Spruill Dog Park

Improvements planned for Spruill Dog Park

The Spruill dog park will be closed from August 26 to mid-October for renovation work

Spruill Dog Park will be closed for construction from August 26 through mid-October. The city is improving the park’s drainage and installing three new freeze-proof water dispensers that will be connected to a nearby sewer system. This will eliminate the need for the gravel-filled overflow basins next to the dispensers that have contributed significantly to the park’s ongoing drainage problems. After the drainage project is completed, city staff will plant approximately 15 new 4-foot-tall trees and replace all turf in the large and small dog parks. After a two-week watering and turf establishment period, the parks are expected to reopen in mid-October.

A temporary dog park will be constructed adjacent to the existing dog park so that pet owners will have access to an area to walk their dogs off-leash during construction. Drinking water will not be available during construction, so all guests are asked to bring drinking water for themselves and their pets.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve this beloved neighborhood park.

Project background

In the 2023-2024 budget, City Council allocated funds to install artificial turf at Spruill Dog Park. However, a survey found that users preferred natural grass, despite the park’s periodic need to close for maintenance and rain. Since there was no support for artificial turf, staff was directed to use some of the funds to improve stormwater drainage at the park, connect the pet drinking fountains to the sewer system, plant additional shade trees, and replace the drinking fountains.
