BUCKEYE, AZ (AZFamily) – Due to a gas leak, students at a high school in the West Valley were evacuated and released early on Friday.
The gas leak was reported at Buckeye Union High School around 10 a.m. Emergency crews found two buildings with a strong smell of gas and evaluated the gas meters.
The high school was evacuated for the safety of students and staff, said Rayne Gray, spokeswoman for the Buckeye Fire Department. The city of Buckeye said the school canceled classes for the day and was working with parents to get students home safely.
The Dr. Saide Rec Center is open to students who need a place to go out.
Dr. Steve Bebee, superintendent of the Buckeye Union High School District, issued a statement to Arizona’s family regarding the incident:
Video from Arizona’s Family’s drone showed students being led out of the school building and into buses and vehicles.
Southwest Gas firefighters were on site assisting with the investigation.
