Paralympic snowboarder from Park City saves rider and prevents truck fire in Parleys Canyon

Zach Miller is a member of the U.S. Para Snowboard Team. He is a two-time world champion, won the 2023 ESPY Award for Best Athlete with a Disability, and competed in the 2022 Paralympics in Beijing.

While riding his motorcycle through Parleys Canyon for training on August 10, he saw smoke rising from under a white Ford F-150 truck. As Miller got closer, he noticed a fire burning in the engine compartment.

“That’s when I realized it was an emergency situation,” Miller said. “So I immediately started waving to get his attention.”

The truck driver seemed confused at first, but fortunately responded to Miller’s wild motions to stop. When he reached the side of the road, Miller shouted to the man that the truck was on fire.

Miller asked the driver if he had a fire extinguisher; he didn’t. The couple reacted quickly and used water bottles to put out the fire instead.

“Time was really of the essence here,” Miller said. “I think if he had continued driving, the situation would have been a lot worse. So I’m really glad that it didn’t turn into a situation that involved multiple people and potentially could have set Parleys Canyon on fire again.”

Miller later shared the experience on Instagram, and the post was viewed millions of times. The truck driver commented on the video, saying he got home safely and then took the truck to a mechanic.
