Vikings sign QB Matt Corral and officially place JJ McCarthy on the injured list

The Vikings have signed quarterback Matt Corral and officially placed JJ McCarthy on the injured list, the team announced Friday.

Corral was selected by the Panthers two years ago in the third round (94th overall) out of Ole Miss. He has yet to play in a regular-season NFL game. Corral spent his rookie year on the injured list and was released by Carolina during final cuts last year. He was signed by the Patriots but only spent a few weeks with New England.

This spring, Corral played with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League. In three regular season games, he threw for 494 yards and two touchdowns, along with 92 rushing yards. He also threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns in a playoff game.

For the Vikings, this is a chance to get a look at a former top-100 pick who could still have potential at age 25. Corral joins a quarterback room that also includes starter Sam Darnold (his former teammate in Carolina), backup Nick Mullens and second-year player Jaren Hall.

The Vikings’ new quarterback has about a week and a half to convince the Vikings that he should be their third choice over Hall. Corral probably won’t be ready to play Saturday against the Browns, but he will practice next week and may play in the final game of the season at Philadelphia on the 24th.

At Mississippi, the 6-foot-1 Corral threw for nearly 6,700 yards with 49 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his final two seasons. He was a dual threat and also ran for 1,100 yards and 15 scores during that span. Corral was named to the All-SEC second team in 2021.

McCarthy’s placement on the injured list officially confirms that the season is over for the promising rookie.
