Problem of barrier-free access at the station solved

Accessibility has been improved at a station in Hampshire where disabled passengers were unable to exit the train due to steps.

Previously, travellers from Southampton to Totton had to continue to Brockenhurst and then return to Totton to reach the accessible north platform.

But a new footpath linking the station to Totton High Street means wheelchair users, mobility scooter users and pushchairs can now alight on the south side.

Lulu Bowerman, Hampshire County Council’s highways representative, described the project as “urgently needed”.

Peter Williams, customer and commercial director at South Western Railway (SWR), said he understood rail passengers’ need to be able to travel more independently.

“This new level footpath connecting the high street to Totton’s west platform will make travel more accessible and convenient for customers using the station, particularly those with pushchairs, luggage or reduced mobility,” he said.

In addition, existing sidewalks were renewed and the area was equipped with new street lighting.

The programme was delivered by the County Council, SWR and Network Rail with additional support from the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund.
