British swimmer claims there are worms in the food at the Olympic Village

There are many things that athletes look forward to while in the Olympic Village.

Unfortunately for a British swimmer, food is not one of them.

“The food is not good enough for the level of performance expected from the athletes. We have to do our best,” Adam Peaty, who won a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke, told Inews this week.

Peaty said the food at other Olympic venues such as Tokyo and Rio had been excellent. However, when talking about how Paris compared, Peaty was less than complimentary.

“But this time … there weren’t enough protein options, long queues, 30-minute waits for food because there’s no queue system,” Peaty said. “These (complaints) are for people to get healthy again. And for the organizing committee, so we’ll bring them to our team in full depth and detail.”

To maintain his fitness and perform at his best, Peaty says he enjoys eating meat, just as he does at home. He estimates that 60 percent of the meat served in Paris is meatless and about 30 percent of all meals are plant-based.

But the fish contained undesirable ingredients, and he didn’t want them.

“I like my fish, but people find worms in it. That’s just not good enough,” said Peaty, a three-time Olympic gold medalist. “The standard is that we look at the best of the best in the world and we don’t give them the best to eat.”

“I just want people to get better in their roles and jobs. And I think athletes are the best voice for that.”
