Doozie’s is located at 4105 S. 11th St. near Lake Manawa. The business has been around since 2016 when owner Susie Larson and her husband Don decided to open it.

Although the location was previously recognized by Unleash Council Bluffs as home to the best burger in Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County, Doozie’s is better known for its ice cream.

The store offers 16 different flavors that change daily. Three flavors remain in the store permanently: vanilla bean, sinful chocolate and butterbrickle.

The Butterbrickle flavor is especially unique to Council Bluffs, as the toffee is believed to have been invented in the city.

Sugar Makery first opened its doors in Glenwood on August 17, 2017. The store was founded and owned by Alexis McCue. He later opened another store in Council Bluffs at Valley View Drive at 19278 Conifer Lane and recently opened a new location in Shenandoah.

McCue got her start in candy making after learning to make almond butter toffees for her father, who supported him during his battle with cancer, and now her passions flow into the shop.

Sugar Makery sells all kinds of sweet treats, but is best known for its homemade ice cream and over 50 flavors of popcorn.

McCue recently created a new flavor of corn ice cream to welcome RAGBRAI riders to Glenwood.

“The best thing about making ice cream is that we can be as creative as we allow ourselves to be,” McCue said. “Candy and candy are an escape from reality for all of us.”

Tastee Treet, 13996 Wabash Ave., has been around since 1955. Originally open as a window-service only store, the business was remodeled in 1997 to offer indoor seating.

The store is family owned and currently run by Megan Hastie, who took over from her father, resulting in the store being in the family for over 36 years.

Tastee Treet not only sells tasty snacks, but also other foods like burgers and fries. However, the biggest selection is the ice cream dishes. Tastee Treet offers candy shakes with changing candy malts of the month from Rice Krispies Treats to Nutella – the choice is endless.

The store also offers several flavors of Dole Whip that change almost weekly. From pomegranate to mango, the Dole Whip flavors are a big hit at the store.

Tastee Treet recently added ice cream nachos to its menu for a limited time.

Owner Megan Hastie said their most popular item is the candy melts. The shop cuts up the candy itself so customers can have larger pieces in their ice cream.

Her favorite part: “I just love seeing the customers happy and excited when they come here.”
