STATEN ISLAND, NY — When a restaurant announces its opening, everyone gets excited. The flood of emails, clicks on restaurant announcements and lines of fans suggest that the quick-casual menu is highly anticipated and an indication that lines of customers are ahead.

But it was the excitement surrounding a new Dunkin’ Donuts — set to open at the site of a former Dunkin’ in Dongan Hills — that sparked curiosity about how many Dunkin’ locations there already are in the district. (The number is 39.)
How do other fast food companies compare to that number? Here’s what we learned from Department of Health and Mental Hygiene records and our own reports about what the food industry is currently like.
(Spoiler alert: Starbucks and Subway are two brands that also have double-digit sales.)
There are currently 1,061 licensed restaurants in the district.
Not included in the following consideration are places like pretzel shops, bubble tea shops, ice cream shops, pizza places, bagel shops, and purveyors of highly specific snacks or sweets like Donut World, Cinnabon, and Crumbl Cookie. Gourmet sandwich establishments like Anthony’s Paninoteca and Ronnie’s Sandwich Shoppe would not be “fast food” in my opinion.
