Procter & Gamble has expanded its recall of Iams dry cat food due to a possible salmonella contamination, saying that 476 bags have found their way onto the shelves of Walmart stores in 14 states. The company had previously claimed that the food was only sold in one city in Colorado, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said.

Last week, P&G announced a recall of some 8-pound bags of Proactive Health Iams Indoor Weight Control with Hairball Care sold in Loveland, Colorado. This week, the company added that the potentially contaminated pet food was also sold in Walmart stores in Illinois, New Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The affected lot has the code date 02304173 (B1-B6) and the UPC number 1901403921. No illnesses have been reported, but consumers should throw away the lot and call P&G at 800-862-3332 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern Time for a replacement or refund.

P&G spokesman Jason Taylor said the recalled pet food batch contained about 20,000 bags and all but 476 were picked up before they reached the market. The remaining bags were distributed to Walmart stores, of which about 60 may have been sold to consumers. No other retailer received any portion of the pet food batch.
