The future of a Derbyshire bungalow destroyed by a fatal gas explosion is to be decided.

Nigel Barrow, 78, was flown by helicopter to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital following the explosion at the end of a terraced house on Ollersett Avenue in New Mills in November last year.

He succumbed to his injuries three days later and residents of 14 surrounding properties were also evacuated from their homes.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), High Peak Borough Council planners will discuss on Monday whether to restore the property, which includes the two-bedroom bungalow and newly landscaped rear garden.

The explosion on November 14 caused the building to collapse and was later demolished.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion is still ongoing (BBC)

Fire crews from New Mills, Glossop, Whaley Bridge and Buxton, Derbyshire Police, East Midlands Ambulance Service, a rescue helicopter and staff from gas company Cadent attended the scene.

The council set up a recreation centre for residents at New Mills Leisure Centre and some households were provided with temporary accommodation before they were required to return to their homes the following day.

Derbyshire Police have submitted a file into Mr Barrow’s death to the coroner, but all agency investigations into the explosion are ongoing.

The recommendation to the Council’s Planning Committee is to restore the property.

If rebuilt, it would be fitted with a Carelink service and leased by the council to a couple or individual aged 55 or over.
