Following a financial injection, plans for a new London Overground station next to Millwall Stadium have been renewed.

A developer building thousands of homes in the area has pledged £17 million for the project.

The massive, five-phase project, proposed for an area around Surrey Canal Road, was originally approved by Lewisham Council in 2022.

But the Renewal Group, which plans to build around 3,500 homes in South Bermondsey, has cut the number of affordable homes in the second phase of the planned development by 100 to finance the Surrey Canal station.

The company’s Jordana Malik told a strategic planning meeting in Lewisham on July 31 that development had progressed more slowly than expected, but said construction on the first phase should begin in 2026.

Overall, the project envisages a share of around 30% affordable housing, although this will be reduced in the second phase.

Transport for London (TfL) originally wanted to cover the costs of the planned station from the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF). However, TfL has since used the money for other projects that have gone over budget.

An auditorium, offices, restaurants and cafes will also be built. Later phases of the development, as agreed in the planning, will include a new leisure centre as well as green spaces, restaurants and shops.
