Block Build MKE repairs and revitalizes Milwaukee couple’s home

In Milwaukee’s Amani neighborhood, nearly a dozen homes were renovated on Saturday, August 17, as part of a revitalization project to assist homeowners.

As Amos Wise strums his guitar in his Milwaukee home, a less soothing sound can be heard in the hallway: a group of people renovating his house from the inside out.

“Everyone is so nice and does a good job,” said Amos Wise.

This renovation measure is part of the Blockbau-MKE.

Almost 600 volunteers spent Saturday morning in the Amani district.

They carried out important repairs and beautification measures free of charge.

“I’m so glad this is done. It was really a mess for a while,” Wise added. “It means everything in the world to me that this is done.”

Amos and Gladys Wise are just a few of the homeowners Revitalize Milwaukee wanted to help this year.

Bruce Elliott makes sure everything is in order and you can tell he cares.

“Everyone is doing it from the bottom of their hearts and it just feels right,” Elliott said. “I don’t cry at movies. I don’t usually cry, but this just touches me.”

Organizers say common projects include building new porches and stairs.

Volunteers also handle painting, landscaping, plumbing, gardening and more.

“You can transform neighborhoods block by block,” Elliott added.

The Wises have owned their home since 1973. They have created countless memories there and this kind gesture towards their home adds even more joy to their eventful life.

“I thank God for all of them. I really do,” Wise said.

This is the 24th year of Block Build MKE.
