The Philadelphia Phillies have named a section of the outfield wall at Citizens Bank Park after a significant figure in the franchise’s history who was instrumental in the stadium’s construction in 2004.

The angled wall in left center field will be named “Monty’s Angle” in honor of the late David Montgomery, the club announced Saturday at the former Phillies president and CEO’s posthumous induction into the team’s Wall of Fame. A sign with the new name was placed on the wall above the 409-foot-tall sign.

Mongtomery, a Philadelphia native and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, began working with the Phillies in 1971 in the sales and business department and later purchased the team with Bill Giles in 1981. He initially served as executive vice president before taking over Giles’ position as club president in 1997.

Under Montgomery’s leadership, the Phillies reached their most successful period in franchise history: they won the National League East five times in a row from 2007 to 2011, two consecutive NL championships in 2008 and 2009, and the 2008 World Series championship.

Montgomery took a break in 2014 due to jaw cancer and assumed the title of chairman in 2015. He died on May 8, 2019 at the age of 72.

After receiving the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award from Major League Baseball in 2020, Montgomery was inducted into the Phillies’ Wall of Fame in 2024 to honor his service to the club and the city of Philadelphia.

The ceremony took place at the ballpark that Montgomery helped design. Citizens Bank Park’s retro-classic design was largely inspired by Montgomery’s penchant for the old-school feel and unique dimensions of Connie Mack Stadium in the 1950s and 1960s.

The angled wall has provided a number of memorable and exciting plays over its 20 years of existence, including multiple home runs inside the park by stars like Chase Utley, Bryce Harper and JT Realmuto. Now, the field’s distinctive feature will commemorate the manager who brought it into being.
