Officers shoot man during standoff outside house in Americus

Sheriff’s officers shot and killed a man in a southwest Georgia town after he fired at them, officials said Thursday.

Sumter County Sheriff Eric Bryant said officers were called to a home on the outskirts of Americus Wednesday night after a woman called 911 to report a man with a gun barricaded himself inside a home. The man was identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as Jamie Lynn Still, 45, of Americus.

The caller said Still was “acting very erratically and was intoxicated,” Bryant said in a statement. The woman added that she was locked in the house with three children and Still “became physical.”

When officers arrived, Still came out onto a porch with a rifle, fired the weapon and then ran back inside, Bryant said. GBI investigators say Still refused to surrender when backup arrived and officers tried to talk to him.

When Still appeared and fired again, according to the GBI, officers fired back and one hit Still before he ran back inside. The sheriff said officers helped the woman and three children escape the home at the same time through a window. After they were safely rescued, according to Bryant, officers entered the home and found Still lying on the ground. By the time paramedics arrived, he was already dead, the sheriff said.

No officers were injured.

The GBI is conducting an autopsy on Still’s body and investigating, as is standard practice in most police shootings in Georgia. Once the investigation is complete, District Attorney Lewis Lamb will decide whether to file charges against anyone.
