HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities are searching for a man accused of killing his estranged wife’s boyfriend in front of her in a home near Katy and then forcing her to help him dispose of the body in a Texas town 120 miles away.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has issued an arrest warrant for 48-year-old Michael Maurice Mack for the murder of 53-year-old Kelvin Hinton.

Officials said Hinton broke into his wife’s home on Wells Station Court in Katy around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning while wearing a tactical vest and carrying at least four weapons.

They say when the woman and Hinton woke up, Mack was standing over them with a rifle and, according to the woman, shot Hinton in the neck with it.

Charging documents say Mack then forced his wife to shoot and beat Hinton’s body.

He then allegedly threatened to kill her if she did not help him dispose of the body. He is said to have wrapped it in bedsheets and loaded it into the trunk of his wife’s car.

Officials said Mack and his wife then drove to a fenced-in property in the 1000 block of Old Highway 90 West in Vidor, where Mack dumped Hinton’s body, doused it with gasoline and set it on fire.

After driving his wife back to the Houston area, Mack said he let her go and she immediately called authorities.

Mack and his wife, who married in 2019, had been living apart for over a year, according to court documents.

Hinton leaves behind two daughters and several grandchildren. His family says he was just beginning to turn his life around.

“Got out of prison and got his truck license,” said Hinton’s brother Michael Lewis.

They say he began dating the woman several weeks ago and claimed her estranged husband was stalking her, but they didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation until after his death.

“He didn’t tell me that the guy had called him and threatened not to come back to the house,” Lewis said.

Mack was previously arrested for harassing his wife through repeated phone calls. He posted bail but violated conditions prohibiting him from contacting his wife.
