Kenya: Aviation union strike on August 19 will not affect flights

Kenya Airport

On Friday, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said it had taken emergency measures to prevent disruption to airport operations caused by a strike by the country’s main aviation union starting on August 19.

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union, which represents employees at airports and the national airline Kenya Airways, announced it would begin industrial action starting Monday over a planned contract with India’s Adani Airports Holdings to build the country’s largest airport in the capital Nairobi.

The union feared the Adani deal would lead to job losses and attract foreign workers, calling it an “intended sale” of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in a strike call.

The Kenyan government said the airport was not for sale and no decision had yet been made on whether to proceed with the planned public-private partnership to modernise the East African transport hub.

“Discussions are ongoing between the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, KAA management and the Kenya Aviation Workers Union to reach an amicable settlement,” the airport authority said in a statement.
