A teenager was hit and killed by a train at Winchester station on Friday evening.

Horrified passengers watched as the boy was hit by a freight train on the busy southbound platform shortly after 5 p.m.

The station was immediately closed and operations were suspended until 6:30 p.m.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police (BTP) told Hampshire Chronicle: “On Friday 7 February, BTP officers were called to Winchester station following reports that a person had been struck by a train.

“Officers from the BTP and Hampshire Police attended the incident which was reported to the BTP at 5.16pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Paramedics from the local emergency service also attended the scene but the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. A file is being prepared for the coroner.

“The train involved was a freight train. The line was reopened at 6:29 p.m.”

According to the Daily EchoCondolences from strangers poured in on Twitter, with one user, Kerry Gould, writing: “Rest in peace to the boy killed at Winchester train station tonight. My thoughts are with his friends and family.”
