Rabid bat found in Middlesex County home

SOUTH RIVER – A live bat found in a home in the community has tested positive for rabies, the Middlesex County Health Department said in a statement.

The bat was discovered near Daily and Edgewood streets, the statement said.

This is the fourth rabid animal reported in Middlesex County this year and the first rabid animal in South River.

On Monday, two South River residents found a live bat in their home. The animal was picked up by the animal control officer and taken to the New Jersey Department of Health laboratory for testing. On Wednesday, it was reported that the animal tested positive for rabies.

There were three possible persons in contact with the bat: the two residents and their dog.

Residents were advised to contact a doctor about possible post-exposure rabies treatment. They were also advised to contact a veterinarian about their dog. The dog is vaccinated against rabies.

The Middlesex County Health Department continues to monitor rabies cases within the community.
