Is this national furniture chain moving to Redding?

Excavation is underway and foundation work has begun for the new La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries store in South Redding.

The store will open in the Churn Creek Marketplace shopping center east of Interstate 5 on Churn Creek Road.

Word is that La-Z-Boy will be moving from its current location on Athens Avenue to the Village Plaza shopping center. Angel Ochoa of La-Z-Boy could not confirm this when I asked.

The new La-Z-Boy store is located on the west side of the Churn Creek Marketplace Center next to Mechanics Bank and directly south of the SasqWash car wash.

Last summer, the city approved a modified use permit for the shopping center at the corner of South Bonnyview and Churn Creek Road, paving the way for the furniture store.

The plans submitted also included a new Michael’s craft store, along with a 5,600-square-foot retail discount store building and a fast-food restaurant with a drive-thru.

Other new tenants at the center include Five Below, a chain that – as the name suggests – sells products for $5 or less, ULTA Beauty, Express Car Wash and Daiso, which, according to its website, is “a 50-year-old, family-run business with over 100,000 products,” according to Capital Rivers Commercial.

So far there only seems to be construction on the new La-Z-Boy. I’m told work on the furniture store will be completed next spring.

Ochoa said he could not give an opening date at this time.

Stay tuned.

Bargain Bins comes to Redding

The bargain shopping trend is growing in Redding under a familiar name.

Bargain Bins, which opened its first Shasta County store in Anderson last summer, opened Friday, August 16, on Hilltop Drive in the old Kelly Moore Paints building across from Big Lots! and Burlington.

Bargain Bins in Redding joins Falling Prices, which opened last spring in the former Creson’s Mattress space on Athens Avenue.

Both stores operate on the same principle: on the first day of their weekly opening hours, goods are priced at a certain price, then prices drop every day. On the last day, customers can get items for a dollar. But by then the selection can be quite limited.

Prices at Bargain Bins start at $12 on Fridays, $8 on Saturdays, $4 on Sundays, $2 on Mondays and $1 on Tuesdays. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Siblings Jordan Chabolla and Danielle Chabolla were first in line before the doors opened on Friday. They said they arrived at the store around 8 a.m.

Jordan Chabolla said she likes the store because you can often find good deals on name-brand products like home goods and children’s toys. She said the best time to shop is during $12 days.

“It is the most stocked and not so crowded because people are rummaging through the trash cans,” she said.

She compared the experience to a treasure hunt.

“You can look at a few things to maybe find what you’re looking for. They post a lot on social media, so a lot of people do their research there and know what they’re coming for and get that and leave,” Jordan Chabolla said.

Greyhound returns to Redding

Did you know that until recently, Greyhound didn’t make stops in Redding?

That has now changed.

I recently received an email from a PR firm that represents the legendary bus line.

“I hope you are well. I interrupt to let you know that Greyhound recently resumed bus service to its Mt. Shasta and Redding markets after a brief pause at both locations,” the email said.

As before, Greyhound will pick up and drop off customers at the Redding Area Bus Authority terminal downtown at 1530 Yuba St.

In Mount Shasta, the bus stops at 144-120 Morgan Way, at the orange bus stop across from the Best Western Hotel.

Additionally, according to the email, customers can once again purchase tickets at the bus stop in Redding.

In 2022, a Greyhound spokeswoman told me the company had switched to an E-Stop purchase format in Redding. Tickets could be purchased at retailers such as 7-11, CVS, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

This meant that the nearest Greyhound station where passengers could purchase tickets was in Red Bluff.

Tickets can also be purchased at Greyound.com.
