Food and drink review at Shannon Door in Jackson – NBC Boston

Food and drink review at Shannon Door in Jackson – NBC Boston

There has always been a connection between the city of Boston and the Mount Washington Valley in New Hampshire. North Conway, Glen, Bartlett, Jackson and other places have long served people from Eastern Massachusetts.

And quite a few people from the Greater Boston area have either moved to the region or have second homes there, making it more than just a tourist area where vacationers come for a few days and then leave. As a result, there are a number of restaurants, bars and other businesses here that give it a Boston feel.

There’s perhaps no better example of this than a cozy pub on the outskirts of Jackson Village, opened many years ago by a family with roots in the Boston area. The Shannon Door Pub & Restaurant actually feels like it could be in the city rather than in a quaint hamlet hidden in the shadow of the Northeast’s highest peaks.

Opened in 1953 and still run by members of the family who hail from the Greater Boston area, Shannon Door is located on a hill just off Route 16 where it meets Route 16A, a short but beautiful loop road that runs directly east through the heart of Jackson Village.

The building is basically a big old house and it has all the charm you would expect from such a place, including multiple dining areas, a cozy bar in the back, a small stage area near the bar where you can hear traditional Irish music, rock, blues, country, pop and more, and a large screened patio on the side that is open from late May through October.

Lots of knick-knacks, memorabilia and the like adorn the walls of The Shannon Door and you might also see photos of celebrities, politicians and sportsmen who have visited the place over the years.

At its core, The Shannon Door is a traditional Irish pub, although the evening menu (and yes, it’s only open for dinner) is quite varied, ranging from Irish fare to classic American dishes, pub grub, and comfort food.

One of the most popular dishes here is bar pizza, which resembles something you might find south of Boston (an area known for its pan-cooked bar pizza), as the recipe is based on pizza the family made years ago in the city’s southern suburbs. Bar pizza is hard enough to find immediately west and north of Boston, and it’s even harder to find in northern New England, so this might actually be an unexpected treat for many people in southeastern Massachusetts who love this regional style of pizza.

But there’s a lot more than just bar pizza at Shannon Door. Other popular options include a delicious bowl of chili with plenty of cheese; stuffed quahogs like you’d expect on the southern shore of Massachusetts; grilled steak tips like you might find north of Boston; an old-fashioned plate of spaghetti with meatballs served with garlic bread; another very old-fashioned plate of liver and onions that’s also complemented with bacon; a hearty cottage pie made of layers of mashed potatoes and ground beef, plus corn and gravy; and a cheeseburger, which can be ordered with lettuce, tomatoes and bacon and served with either fries or onion rings.

Beer, spirits and cocktails are the most popular drinks at The Shannon Door, and it’s probably no surprise that pints of Guinness stout are among the drinks most often served here. But New Hampshire has a number of good local breweries these days, so you might also find options from Moat Mountain (North Conway), Tuckerman (Conway), Woodstock (North Woodstock) and Deciduous (Newington), as well as other beers from Maine, Vermont and beyond. Of course, Irish whiskeys are also available here, and the bartenders will mix you plenty of retro and modern drinks too (you can also order wine by the glass or bottle).

For folks living in or around Boston and staying in the Mount Washington Valley who are craving a bar with a family atmosphere, Shannon Door Pub & Restaurant may be the best option in the area—if not the entire White Mountains—and that’s saying something: nearby North Conway is home to a number of great watering holes.

But The Shannon Door has that homey, cozy feel that so many pubs in the Boston area have, and it wouldn’t feel out of place in Ireland either – it’s a bit like the homey country pubs that seem to pop up on almost every corner there. There’s a reason this eating and drinking establishment has been around for more than 70 years, because it’s a favorite with locals and visitors alike.
