Former Wales star Louis Rees-Zammit makes home debut for Chiefs

Former Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit made his home debut for the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday as the reigning Super Bowl champions’ preseason campaign continued.

The Chiefs hosted the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium for their penultimate preseason game before their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on September 6.

Rees-Zammit struggled with a back injury in the days leading up to the Lions game, but recovered in time to play in multiple roles in the Chiefs’ 24-23 loss.

The 23-year-old, who played for Gloucester and the British and Irish Lions during his rugby career, returned a punt 27 yards and also played as a wide receiver, although he did not catch a ball.

Rees-Zammit also took a kickoff for the Chiefs in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs’ final preseason game is Friday against the Chicago Bears, after which Andy Reid and his coaching staff will select their 53-man roster for the NFL season.

Rees-Zammit looked to prove his value and versatility to the team throughout the preseason after joining the team on a three-year contract in March through the NFL’s International Player Pathway.

Last week he made his debut in the preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, playing as a running back, kicker and punt returner.
