Meanwhile, X-user @TTEcclesBrown responded to @WallStreetSilv’s post, writing on Thursday, “Walmart is locking away pretty much everything in the high-theft areas!” The post also included a video showing items like air fresheners and cleaning supplies locked away behind glass doors.

In recent months, many businesses have seen an increase in shoplifting, prompting some companies like Walmart and Target to implement additional security measures.

On X (formerly Twitter), user @WallStreetSilv shared a photo on Thursday of several pairs of jeans locked behind glass security doors that an employee had to open so a customer could purchase them.

In many cities, shoplifting rates have declined during the COVID-19 pandemic because more stores have been closed. That has not been the case in Dallas. There, shoplifting rates remained flat throughout the pandemic but began to rise in November and December of last year, says Ernesto Lopez, a research specialist and co-author of the council’s report.

“In 2023, you will see a steady increase in shoplifting in Dallas,” he said.

This year, the number of shoplifting incidents reported to Dallas police is up 56.1% compared to the same period last year, which ended Nov. 5. But Dallas retailers wouldn’t bother building additional locked display cases and adding more security guards if they didn’t have a theft problem, Lopez says.

Kroger said the new security measures were a response to an increase in thefts.
