There are few American trailers more iconic than the Airstream. Today I’m looking at a refurbished Airstream that serves as a small home on wheels for a family of five.

The look of an Airstream trailer is instantly recognizable due to its smooth aluminum exterior. The company still makes trailers today, but these high-quality vehicles come at correspondingly high prices. If your budget is tight, buying an older model and refurbishing it to modern standards is a more affordable option.

That’s what Delmara and Tom did with this 25-foot Airstream Trade Wind. They sold everything they owned, renovated this trailer and moved into it, where they have been traveling for the past two and a half years. A renovation like this is not “for the weak” – You have to know what you are doing and it will take a lot of blood, sweat and tears to complete the project.

In this family’s case, they spent thousands of hours working on the trailer just to ensure top-notch construction and proper insulation and sealing, and only then could they begin building the interior and everything we see on the surface.

That’s an incredible amount of dedication. They didn’t just do the renovation for a few years. They also said they want their grandchildren to be able to travel in this trailer. The couple are obviously huge Airstream fans, otherwise they certainly wouldn’t have embarked on this very demanding journey of renovation.

Delmara and Tom got the trailer in decent shape, but they did a few extra jobs to get it in great shape. They restored the frame, built a new underbody, and installed steel wheel wells, among other things. They also installed sheep’s wool insulation, which they said works great.

As usual, I’ll start the tour with the exterior of the vehicle. At first glance, most people would think this is a regular Airstream. The only elements that might indicate that this trailer has been refurbished are on the roof. You’ll notice two solar panels, an awning, two Maxxair fans and a large air conditioning unit.

Aside from that, Delmara and Tom made sure the vehicle looked like it was in its original condition. That’s what most people do because those spherical Airstreams just look great.

The couple wanted the living space to be as functional as possible, especially since it serves as a home for five people. They also wanted the interior to have a 70s feel, so simple but still aesthetically pleasing.

The living/sleeping area occupies the front part of the interior of this Airstream. It consists of a U-shaped couch and a solid maple table. To transform the couch into an almost queen-size bed, all you have to do is lower the table and rearrange the cushions.

Other notable details in this area include windows on all three sides and various storage options, including drawers and cabinets, on the sides and on top. In addition, the bench in the rear area houses the vehicle’s power system. Its highlights are lithium batteries (we don’t know their capacity), an inverter and a solar charge controller.

The kitchen is located just outside the entrance. A well-equipped kitchen is essential when traveling with family. This kitchen features a huge, deep sink with cutting board covers, a Berkey water filter that provides plenty of drinking water, a countertop with more than enough space for preparing meals, and an oven/three-burner stove combo.

The kitchen counter offers plenty of storage space in the form of cabinets and drawers. In addition, there is a long shelf overhead that can hold books, decorations, and other items. In addition, the compartments in the lower part of the counter house the water heater and a propane tank.

On the opposite side, the couple designed a spacious counter that incorporates a Novacool fridge/freezer. It’s not particularly large, but it does the job. Next to it is a huge floor-to-ceiling pantry.

Going deeper into the trailer you come to the children’s room. It has two bunk beds – the daughter sleeps in the top bunk while the two boys sleep in the bed below, which can be extended by a pull-out wooden frame. Each bunk bed has two long cupboards for storage.

However, you can pack a lot more clothes into the huge closet opposite the bunk bedroom. The rear of the interior is occupied by a lovely bathroom, separated from the rest of the living space by a sliding door. It features a striking copper sink on a cabinet, a composting toilet, a storage area with a trash can and several shelves, and a shower with penny tile walls and a small seat.

All in all, this Airstream has been beautifully renovated and features a simple but very practical interior that can comfortably accommodate a family of five. Kudos to the family for making the brave decision to sell everything they owned and for their dedication to bringing this stunning project across the finish line.
