How to use your PS VR2 headset with a Windows PC

Virtual reality has come a long way. Nowadays, it’s easy to find a decent headset for your PC or gaming console. While there are many options, the PlayStation VR2 is one of the best options. The peripheral not only serves PS5 owners, but is now making its way to PC as well.

In our PlayStation VR2 review, writer Andy Zahn noted that the headset was so good (on paper, at least) that it would “make owners of high-end PC VR headsets jealous” as it delivers an impressive headset with good value for money. So what can you do if you’re an envious PC gamer or fed up with the limited range of VR games on PlayStation? If you want to access Steam VR and play games like Half-Life: Alyx on the PS VR2, Sony has just released a PlayStation VR2 PC adapter that lets you use your headset with a Windows PC with relative ease.

How to connect PlayStation VR2 to a PC

Just as the PlayStation 5 was hard to get for quite a while after release, this adapter is already hard to find. At the time of writing, Target is the only major retailer that has the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter. Even if the adapter isn’t available when you try to purchase it, stock often fluctuates, just like the actual PlayStation 5 console.

However, once you get your hands on a PS VR2 PC adapter, it’s relatively easy to connect to your PC. With the PlayStation, you use a single USB-C cable to connect the headset to the console, and the adapter is designed to perform the same function. You connect the PS VR2 PC adapter to your PC via USB-A and DisplayPort, then power the adapter via a DC barrel jack. The adapter connects to your headset via a USB-C port on the other end. From there, launch the PlayStation VR2 app on Steam and gain access to some of the best VR games on the market.

What you should know about the PS VR2 PC adapter before you buy it

Unfortunately, as straightforward as the PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter may be, it’s not exactly plug-and-play. For one thing, you’ll need more than the $60 adapter to connect it to a Windows PC. In addition to a Steam account, you’ll also need a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, which isn’t included with the adapter, and the adapter doesn’t support HDMI-to-DisplayPort.

Additionally, according to Sony, the PSVR2 doesn’t support some of its most important features when connected to a PC, such as HDR, eye tracking, adaptive triggers or haptic feedback. The adapter also only works for the headset itself, not its all-important peripherals like the controllers. Controllers must be connected via Bluetooth, and users report having trouble figuring out exactly how to connect the controllers to the PC if it doesn’t already support Bluetooth.

One way to skip all of this and not even have to use the adapter is to be one of the lucky people who own a GPU with a VirtualLink port that can connect directly to the PlayStation VR2. Unfortunately, the VirtualLink port never became widely available and only a few graphics cards have it.
