Weather in Austin: Heat warning until Monday night

A heat warning is currently in effect for much of Central Texas until Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service, dangerous heat is expected in the region from Monday through Thursday.

The current heat advisory expires at 8 p.m. on August 19, but the NWS says heat advisories or extreme heat warnings will likely be issued for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as well.

Sunday’s warning applies to the following counties in Central Texas: Bastrop, Bexar, Caldwell, Comal, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Travis and Williamson.

According to the NWS, temperatures are expected to be between 102 and 104 degrees, with heat index values ​​ranging from 105 to 110. According to FOX 7 Austin meteorologist Leslie London, Austin residents can expect temperatures in the 100s to low 100s at least through Friday.

The NWS also warns Central Texas residents about possible heat-related illnesses and urges

  • Take frequent rest breaks in the shade or in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Drink plenty of water/fluids, even if you are not thirsty
  • check on older relatives and neighbors
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in the vehicle
