The Seattle Mariners bullpen has seen a mix of injuries, regressions, improvements, and even an All-Star selection this season.

On the one hand, the Mariners had to reckon with the long-term injuries of Matt Brash, Gregory Santos and Gabe Speier.

On the other hand, Andres Munoz was named an All-Star.

Rookie Troy Taylor made his major league debut for Seattle and looked solid overall in his few appearances, but his place in the bullpen came at the expense of some poor performances from Jhonathan Diaz, Jonathan Hernandez and Eduard Bazardo.

“Volatile” might be the best word to describe the Mariners’ bullpen, but there were a few exceptions. One of them was Collin Snider.

The third-year pro is in the midst of his best year and put in another solid performance on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Snider was the first reliever out of the bullpen, taking over the mound from starter George Kirby in the seventh inning and helping to take the team out of the game in the correct order.

It was the third of Snider’s last six appearances in which he neither allowed a hit nor gave up a free base.

Snider has a 1.08 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched in 26 appearances this year, making him one of the best statistical relievers in the sport, along with Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase.

According to @MarinersPR:

If those statistics hold through the end of the year, that would be more than three earned runs more than his previous career high of 4.87, which he achieved in 2023 with the Kansas City Royals.

Snider was designated for assignment and signed twice during the 2023 offseason. Seattle signed him off the waivers list on February 6 and promoted him to the major leagues on June 25. Snider’s signing was one of the team’s most underrated acquisitions last year considering how valuable he is to the team.

The Mariners have successfully developed bullpen players in recent years (Drew Steckenrider, Justin Topa, Paul Sewald) and Snider is the latest success story.
