Mets fans chanted “OMG” on Sunday, but nothing good came of it.
The series finale between the Mets and Marlins was broadcast as part of the Roku MLB Sunday Leadoff package, with Marlins commentator Paul Severino providing live commentary and MLB Networking’s Anthony Recker providing analysis.
But Severino’s style did not go down well with Mets fans, especially when Brandon Nimmo hit a solo home run into the second deck in right field at Citi Field in the sixth inning, giving the Mets a 2-1 lead.
Severino’s lack of enthusiasm regarding the call angered Mets fans, who expressed their displeasure on social media.
“A home run in the second pitch for Nimmo and a 2-1 lead for the Mets,” Severino said, with an equally changed emphasis in his voice.
“Games without Gary Cohen suck. That was the most boring HR call I’ve ever seen,” wrote one user on X.
“Total bullshit, Paul Severino is no Gary Cohen,” another person wrote about the home run call.
“‘National broadcasters’ for Roku and it’s just the main announcer for the Marlins, what’s the point of that anyway?” asked another user.
The commentators were apparently not the only problems, as fans complained on social media about the lack of accessibility of the game broadcast and problems with the stream, according to Awful Announcing.
The Mets ultimately lost to the Marlins 3-2 in a game they had to win due to a difficult schedule.
The Mets will face the Orioles in a three-game series in Queens before heading to face the Padres in four games, then traveling to face the Diamondbacks in a three-game series.
Nimmo also left the game in the eighth inning with soreness in his right shoulder after making a pike catch and will have to undergo an MRI on Monday, further clouding the Mets’ day.
