The new RRTS line will bring a significant change to life in the region as it will enable people to live in Meerut and work in Delhi, Noida or Ghaziabad. This development is also expected to boost the real estate market, especially in the hitherto underdeveloped areas east of Ghaziabad.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20 and named Namo Bharat, the rapid transit system has expanded passenger services to the entire Ghaziabad and the outskirts of Meerut within a year. This expansion covers 50% of the planned Delhi-Meerut route and is expected to be completed by June 2025.
Before the opening of Meerut South, a 34 km section was already in operation in Ghaziabad, including Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, Duhai Depot, Muradnagar, Modinagar South and Modinagar North stations. The addition of Meerut South will extend the operational line by a further 8 km.
Meerut South will serve as a major access point to the rest of Meerut city and district including areas like Mohiuddinpur, Bhudbaral, Bahadurpur, Aminagar, Chhajjupur, Kharkhoda, Kadarabad and nearby localities.
In recent years, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway has also brought the two cities closer together, but this benefit has been largely limited to those who drive and can afford the associated costs. The new express train offers a faster and cheaper alternative. The one-way fare from Sahibabad to Meerut South is Rs 110.
The outstanding sections include a 14 km section from Jangpura to Sahibabad and a 23.6 km section from Meerut South to Modipuram. Construction work in Delhi is well underway and only a 2 km elevated section remains to be completed in Meerut.
