Video shows a house in the Outer Banks falling into the sea

In North Carolina, homes are collapsing into the sea at an alarming rate, and the latest dramatic incident was caught on video. A beach house in the Outer Banks community of Rodanthe on Hatteras Island was ripped from its raised wooden foundation when waves, amplified by Hurricane Ernesto, crashed against the shore Friday night, ABC 11 reports. The house was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported, NBC News reports. This is the seventh such collapse on the state’s National Seashore beaches in the past four years, according to the National Park Service.

Climate change is blamed for the collapses, as rising sea levels and intensifying storms erode shorelines, and the debris from such collapses also threatens the local ecosystem. Ernesto caused dangerous beach conditions and elevated sea levels in the Outer Banks that are expected to continue into this week, and visitors have been asked to avoid the beaches until cleanup efforts can be conducted. “Many other homes appear to have been damaged in the Rodanthe area. Hazardous debris could be present for more than 12 miles on the beach and in the water,” the NPS said in a statement. (The service has already purchased and demolished two homes in the collapse-prone area.)
