Home Entertainment: Blu-ray review of “You’re Next”

Home Entertainment: Blu-ray review of “You’re Next”

Since his UK debut at FrightFest in 2011, Team THN has been a huge fan of Adam Winguards home invasion slasher, You are next. In the film, Sharni Vinson’s Erin spends the weekend with her boyfriend Crispian (AJ Bowen) at his family home deep in the country. What begins as a get-together to celebrate her father’s retirement and wealth is soon interrupted by a group of strangers wearing animal masks who wish them harm. The film is now celebrating its thirteenth year in the world. You are next was gifted with the Second Sight treatment.

Taking elements from home invasion and slasher films You are next becomes a wonderful hybrid of both, and one that helped kickstart a new wave of modern genre films. Winguard’s film is also considered the film that made horror icon Barbara Crampton fall in love with genre acting again. Since then, Crampton has produced and starred in a variety of independent horror films, with the star being an avid advocate of the genre’s longevity. In many ways, You are next paved the way for Ready or Notthe two films have some similarities in the plot, You are next‘s Erin is far more deadly than the newlywed Grace. As Erin, Sharni Vinson is pragmatic and fierce. While the carnage ensues, she is the only character who keeps a cool head, and after Vinson’s performance here, it’s a great shame that she was never considered for one of the numerous Terminator Films released since then.

The murders play out like a sick and twisted adult version of Home alone with Erin using everyday objects to create a stunning arsenal. The gory scenes are fantastic and the rapid pace drives the story along beautifully. Even better, Winguard’s film is more than compelling even on a second viewing. Even being armed with the knowledge of certain plot points doesn’t diminish the viewing experience, and that’s largely because Winguard and writer Simon Barrett keep the tone light throughout. Humor surrounds each frame and helps to offset the film’s scary intensity. Funny games, Replace with the energy and vitality of Scream.

For this Second Sight release, the team has, as always, left no stone unturned and created a bespoke edition of You are next that fans of the film and collectors alike will love. With the usual selection of insightful essays in the limited edition and the impressive amount of bonus material on the disc, Second Sight has once again left no stone unturned in its pursuit of perfection. You are next may be entering its teens, but thanks to Second Sight, it will stay true to its legacy of reinvigorating a then-stagnant subgenre.
