Comedian Eric André says he was the victim of racist discrimination at the airport. “I don’t feel safe.”

Actor and comedian Eric André says he was the victim of racial discrimination while travelling through Melbourne Airport in Australia.

André, the Emmy-nominated host of “The Eric André Show,” said in a video on Instagram early Monday morning that he was traveling on business when he was stopped at the airport.

“I was arrested,” 41-year-old André said in the video. “I was pulled out of a lineup and put in a special queue in Melbourne where a dog sniffed me thoroughly.”

He said he had been traveling by plane for 25 hours – from New York to Los Angeles and then on to Melbourne and Brisbane.

“This is one of the many times I have been racially discriminated against at the airport,” André continued, speaking of the experience in Melbourne. “So this is a message to all Black, Brown and Indigenous people travelling through Melbourne today, especially if you are travelling with Qantas International through Terminal 2. Please be careful. They search Black, Brown and Indigenous people.”

André launched an appeal to find out the names of the officials who use dogs at the airport, “or to find out what kind of program it is.” He also looked for a lawyer in Australia who is handling a discrimination case and for information on how many people of color and white people are stopped because of the dog sniffing line.

“I assume it does not reflect the percentage of white passengers compared to passengers of color at any given time at that airport,” André said.

He also urged anyone who employed him in Australia not to let him walk through Melbourne Airport alone.

“Please provide me with a police escort or some sort of security escort or let me fly directly to Brisbane or Sydney,” said André. “I don’t feel safe at Melbourne Airport. I don’t want to be humiliated or racially discriminated against at these airports anymore. I don’t want to cut my hair and wear a three-piece suit to be treated like a first class citizen. I shouldn’t feel like I’m not accepted when entering a country. Shame on the people at Melbourne Airport for having this stupid procedure done. I doubt it helps anyone in Melbourne or Australia have a safer world. I’d love to dig up the statistics on what comes out of this program.”

The comedian described the airport’s approach as unethical – a “senseless Giuliani-style stop-and-frisk program.”

“This has nothing to do with safety,” he said. “It has everything to do with racial harassment.”

André attached a photo from the airport showing one of the officers with a dog.

Melbourne Airport officials responded with a comment on his Instagram video.

“Melbourne Airport does not tolerate any form of racism,” their message said. “We are pursuing your complaint with the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), who are responsible for handling all international arrivals at Melbourne Airport and other Australian international gateways. Melbourne Airport is proud to be the gateway to one of the world’s most multicultural cities. We welcome ALL passengers to Melbourne and expect everyone to be treated equally.”

André, who has hosted Adult Swim’s “The Eric André Show” since 2012, received his first Emmy nomination this year for outstanding actress in a short comedy or drama series. (The series runs 11 minutes per episode.)

In 2022, André and comedian Clayton English filed suit in federal court after they said they were both racially discriminated against by Clayton County police when they were stopped by officers in separate incidents at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. In January, they appealed the dismissal of the case.

André starred in the 2021 hidden camera film “Bad Trip” and appeared in the films “Jackass Forever” and “Jackass 4.5” (both 2022).

He has had voice roles in the films “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” (2021), “Sing 2” (2021) and “Trolls Band Together” (2023), as well as in the Netflix series “Disenchantment”.

André’s other television credits include appearances on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, Netflix’s Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, FXX’s Man Seeking Woman, and ABC’s Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.
