Central States Fair teaches the importance of agriculture through hands-on experience

RAPID CITY, SD (KOTA) – The SoDak Agventure Experience is back at the Central States Fair for its second year as part of the fair’s agricultural education program.

Agriculture is South Dakota’s largest industry, so Paige Vanderwerff, the fair’s livestock and agriculture education manager, wanted to create an experience that would show people where their food comes from.

Children and their families can see chicks, learn about different cuts of meat, use a cow milking simulator, write letters to local farmers and much more.

Vanderwerff said it was important for children to have hands-on experiences like those at the exhibition.

“I see the value of hands-on activities for kids. A lot of kids are tactile learners. They want to touch it, they want to see it and feel it. That’s important to me when choosing these pieces. Kids don’t come in and read a sign, right? They don’t come in and say ‘Oh yeah, that’s really cool’ and then walk away, right? So it’s something that actually stays with them if they can do something with it,” Vanderwerff said.

You can visit the Agventure Experience in the Nerdy Nuts Expo Hall at the Central States Fair now through Saturday, August 24th from noon to 7 p.m.
