Wenschhof new deputy director of C&O Canal Park

WILLIAMSPORT – Edward “Ed” Wenschhof has been named the new deputy superintendent of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal).

Wenschhof previously served as director of visitor and resource protection for the C&O Canal. He has also served as deputy warden at Antietam National Battlefield, Appalachian National Scenic Trail, Catoctin Mountain Park and Gettysburg National Military Park.

He has worked with federal, state and local agencies as well as nonprofit organizations and philanthropic partners.

“Ed is a highly respected leader who has dedicated his career to public service,” said Superintendent Tina Cappetta. “His wealth and depth of experience, coupled with his knowledge of the C&O Canal and its challenges and opportunities, make him a unique candidate to serve as this park’s next deputy superintendent.”

In his new role, Wenschhof will work with the park’s senior management team to oversee operations and planning. His career includes managing natural resources and historic landscapes at Gettysburg and Antietam, fighting fires on public lands, serving as chief National Capital Regional Ranger, and leading teams during hurricane, oil spill and flood responses, as well as presidential memorial events and inaugurations.

As director of visitor and resource protection for the C&O Canal, Wenschhof focuses on protecting the park’s natural and historic resources and its nearly five million visitors each year.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve as deputy superintendent of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park,” said Wenschhof. “I look forward to working with the park’s staff, employees and partners in this new role to continue to manage and protect the cultural, natural and recreational resources of the C&O Canal. The national park not only preserves a story of transportation history; it also serves as a corridor that connects the resources of other public lands, trails and the Potomac River for the benefit of all.”

Wenschhof replaces John Noel, who retired in December.

A Pennsylvania native, Wenschhof holds a master’s degree in geoenvironmental studies from Shippensburg University and a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Pennsylvania State University.

Wenschhof and his wife, Lisa, live on a farm in Pennsylvania, where their children and grandchildren often visit to help with land work and livestock raising. Wenschhof volunteers with Scouting America, the local county fair association and Pennsylvania 4-H.
