7-year-old boy shot and injured while sleeping in Detroit house: police

DETROIT – Police say a 7-year-old boy was shot in the head while sleeping in his Detroit home Monday morning.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital where his condition was stable, but police said he may need surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his head.

The shooting occurred at 5 a.m. at a home in the 16500 block of Fairmount Drive, near the intersection of 8 Mile and Kelly Road.

According to police, at least one gunman opened fire on the house where 11 people were, including eight children.

Police believe the shooting may have been related to a conflict between the shooters and an adult in the home.

“It is extremely cowardly to shoot at a house with so many children in it,” Detroit Police Chief James White told reporters.

The shooters fled the area in a vehicle. Police were still trying to determine the make, model and color of the vehicle.

Police do not know whether the shooting was gang-related, but White is certain it was a conflict between adults.

The 7-year-old boy was hit while sleeping in the front part of the house, police said.

“These kids have absolutely nothing to do with adult conflict,” White told reporters. “The boy is sleeping and he was shot in his home where he should be safe. I don’t know how hard that is supposed to be. I don’t know how that makes sense to someone who calls themselves an adult.”
