On May 1, 2022, Tinley Park Police were called to the home in the 7800 block of West 167th Street by Almaru’s sister.

Neighbors reported at the time that he was taken away on a stretcher while other distraught relatives arrived. They described a chaotic scene with a lot of screaming.

Prosecutors said Maro and her father had argued over her attendance at the prom and she allegedly caused a car accident with her father’s car the week before her death.

Police said they found a bent metal rod and a rubber hammer that were believed to have been used in Maro’s murder.

There was also a letter allegedly written to her by Almaru in which he admitted to hitting Mia after he found out she had lied to him, prosecutors said.

Maro’s death was ruled a homicide due to “multiple injuries,” the medical examiner’s office said. Her body was found on a lower floor of the house.

According to her family, Maro wanted to become a dental hygienist but planned to go to college near home so she could continue to care for her mother.
