SEMO offers robot-assisted food delivery service

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri (KFVS) – There is a new food delivery service on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

A fleet of robots is now available to deliver food and beverages from campus dining establishments such as Redhawks Market (excluding Chick-fil-A), Panda Express, Starbucks, Rowdy’s and Subway.

According to SEMO, all students, staff and faculty need to do is download the Starship Deliveries app, select a food or drink and place a pin where they want the delivery to be sent.

Users can track the robot’s delivery via an interactive map.

When the robot arrives, users receive a notification and can unlock it via the app.

The university said deliveries should take just a few minutes, depending on the items ordered and the distance the robot has to travel.

The app uses the connection with Flex Dollars and Redbucks.

Those responsible in the catering industry are convinced of the new service.

“We have had great success with Starship delivery on other campuses and are excited to offer this convenience to SEMO students,” said Matthew Ludwig, Chartwells’ resident district manager, in a released statement.

According to the university, the robots use a combination of sophisticated machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors to navigate sidewalks and avoid obstacles. Robots can cross streets, negotiate curbs, drive at night and operate in both rain and snow.

SEMO said a team of humans could also monitor the robot’s progress remotely and take control at any time.
